* Explanation for "Why not 'certified'?

1. "C.F.I." is a commonly used abbreviation for "Certified (or Certificated) Flight Instructor". The actual terminology in FAA licensing is just "Flight Instructor" but the abbreviation "F.I." hasn't gained acceptance.

2. There has beeen a need to seperate, in name, flight instructors who have FAA permission to give instruction from those who don't. From 14 CFR part 61 regulations (as of 2025) the term "authorized" is connected to "flight instructor" 13 times; "certificated", 3 times; and "certified", none.
